Basic Embroidery Stitches - What to Learn First

Basic Embroidery Stitches - What to Learn First

Hello Stitchers!

I'm writing this as I am preparing for my first Sip & Stitch for beginner embroiderers.  I am so excited and overwhelmed at the same time.  My to-do list keeps getting longer but we'll leave that for another day.

Anyway! I'm getting prepared and I am asking myself "which stitches should I include in my workshop?"

These 7 stitches tend to encompass beginner embroidery to me.  They're relatively easy and used most often in the kits and patterns that I've seen or used.

Here are the 7 (or 8, depending on your thoughts on Lazy Daisy)

  • Back Stitch
  • Split Stitch
  • Running Stitch
  • Chain Stitch / Lazy Daisy
  • Stem Stitch
  • Satin Stitch
  • Short & Long Stitch

If I have time, I plan to go over a french knot, which is probably my favorite stitch.

I'd love to hear your feedback.  Do I need to add any or take any away?

Ally
