Part 1 - What's the Difference? Machine vs Hand Embroidery?

Part 1 - What's the Difference? Machine vs Hand Embroidery?

Hi Stitchers-

I recently tried to pitch an embroidery class at a fabric store.  They got very excited and asked if I could teach a machine embroidery class. Unfortunately for them, I only am able to teach hand embroidery and that got me thinking about how many people out there think that these skills are interchangeable.

While there are a lot of similarities, there are just as many differences - think hand sewing vs machine sewing or writing with pen vs typing.

In fact, there are so many similarities AND differences between hand and machine embroidery that I thought I would break it up into a two-part series.

Looking back to how embroidery has evolved (both hand and machine) can help us understand the modern similarities and differences.

Hand Embroidery

  • Hand embroidery dates back thousands of years and has been found in ancient cultures including China, Egypt, India, and Persia.
  • Originally, embroidery was used to repair clothing, signify wealth or status, and decorate household textiles.
  • Every region developed its own techniques and styles, from delicate silk embroidery in Asia to folk embroidery in Europe and Mexico.
  • Before sewing machines existed, all embroidery was done entirely by hand, making each piece highly skilled and time-intensive.
  • Modern hand embroidery has shifted toward artistic expression, slow crafting, visible mending, and textile art.

Machine Embroidery

  • Machine embroidery began developing during the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s.
  • Early embroidery machines were hand-operated and used mainly for commercial textile production.
  • Computerized embroidery machines became widely popular in the late 20th century, allowing detailed designs to be stitched quickly and consistently.
  • Today, machine embroidery is used for fashion, monograms, branding, patches, home décor, and small business production.
  • Modern home embroidery machines have made custom embroidery more accessible to hobbyists and small makers.

Did you already know the history of embroidery?  I loved watching the women in Bridgerton hand embroidering in almost every scene.

Stay tuned for Part 2!  Let me know if you are aware of more history!
